Soldier's Monument

Soldier's Monument. Dated 1887; dedicated May 30, 1888. A Civil War soldier holding a rifle. Located at Stevens Park, Hoboken, New Jersey. According to the Smithsonian inventory of American sculpture, the cost of the monument was $4,000.

The same statute was used to commemorate soldiers in other cities including Deposit, New York and Brooklyn, Connecticut.

 Putnam monument

Monument marking the grave of General Israel Putnam, American Revolutionary War hero. Dated 1887; dedicated June 14, 1888. Located at 25 Canterbury Street, Brooklyn, Connecticut. Listed in the Smithsonian inventory of American sculpture. Estimated cost of construction between $8,750 and $9,750. Gerhardt at one time ordered personal stationery using the Putnam statue as his logo.

This statue was dedicated the same day as Gerhardt's Soldier's and Sailors Monument of Brooklyn, Connecticut.

John Fitch plaque

John Fitch. A bronze plaque in the North Lobby of the Capitol, Hartford, Connecticut. The plaque measures approximately 48" by 28"and has the following inscription:

THIS TABLET ERECTED BY THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT COMMEMORATES THE GENIUS PATIENCE AND PRESEVERANCE OF JOHN FITCH A NATIVE OF THE TOWN OF WINDSOR THE FIRST TO APPLY STEAM SUCESSFULLY TO THE PROPULSION OF VESSELS THROUGH WATER

Below the large plaque is a smaller plaque with the following inscription:

THE PLAQUE WAS PLACED IN 1887 FOR THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LAUNCHING OF THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL STEAMBOAT AUGUST 22, 1787, BY JOHN FITCH WHO WAS BORN IN 1743 IN WHAT IS NOW SOUTH WINDSOR AND DIED IN 1798 AT BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY WHERE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN 1927 ERECTED A MONUMENT IN HIS HONOR.

PLACED BY HARTFORD COUNCIL NAVY LEAGUE OF THE UNITED STATES 1969.
