DOING A GENERAL BUSINESS. - An unhealthy looking hombre named Charles Pinto, alias Thompson, was taken into custody on Thursday by officers Ellis and Clark, on suspicion of having perpetrated a series of larcenies which place him second to none on the list of equivocal enterprise, except, perhaps, the indefatigable Mark Mayer. He is accused of having carried off a roll of Brussels carpet from Burnam's store, corner of Mission and Second streets, a lot of drugs and toilet goods from Mayhew's, corner of Fourth and Howard streets, sundries from Hampton's grocery store, corner of Fourth and Minna streets, and also from O'Brien's grocery store at 328 Third street, and various articles from other places he entered. In his possession were found two hunting case watches, a gold one marked No. [illegible] manufactured by Arnold Adams & Co., and one of silver, "Tobias," No.[illegible]. Another silver watch marked "[illegible], London," was also found besides a while stock in trade of sundries. The evidences are strongly in favor of his being a thief, and a most inveterate one. His case will be investigated by Judge Shepheard. In the meantime, parties who are minus anything at all, the disappearance of which is surrounded in mystery, might do well by calling at the office of the Police, where the stolen property is deposited for identification by the owners. Pinto is but recently from New York, and wears the aspect of a sailor.
