The San Francisco Daily Morning Call, July 8, 1864

INSANE. - John Fischer was examined by the Commissioners of Lunacy yesterday, and sent to Stockton. His lunacy ws the result of grief and religious enthusiasm combined. Sorrow for the death of his mother and brother-in-law wore upon his mind until he was half crazed and then in his enfeebled condition, he wrestled with abstruse doctrinal points and they threw him. Well, he is as well off now as he was before, perhaps - unconscious madness must be better than conscious mental distress.
