_____

POLICE COURT. - There were but eight new cases on the Police Court docket this morning, being made up of drunks, carrying concealed weapons, and assaults and batteries, in pretty nearly equal proportion. Seven continued cases from yesterday's docket augmented the labors of his Honor, the whole resulting generally in fines, forfeitures of bail, and further continuances. John Smith, John Carl, James Davis, drunk, bail forfeited; John S. Brown and John G. Smith, concealed weapons, bail forfeited; Charles McDermott,Charles Klaus and Morris Michael, assault and battery, cases continued; James Wilson, misdemeanor, fined ten dollars; Joseph Baxter, assault and battery, fined forty dollars; Michael Hughes, same offence, held for sentence; E. L. Wellington, case continued.

THE SWINDLE CASE. - The case of E. L. Wellington, for doing a country merchant out of some two hundred dollars, in a put-up game of cards, came up yesterday in the Police Court, and after a portion of the evidence was heard, it was continued until today. Two Pike street witnesses, who took the liberty of disobeying the order of Court to retire while opposing testimony was being heard, were rebuked by Judge Shepheard, and one of them sent down for twenty-four hours for contempt of Court. The sentence was afterwards remitted. Both deserved a cell in the County Jail, with ample license to examine it thoroughly. There is not much justice in pitting the testimony of such characters as they are against that of honest men, anyhow. The Police give them both a bad name.

_____

CHANCE FOR THE HOTELS. - Yesterday, Officer Rose arrested Ah Yee -- just lately out of the Penitentiary -- for stealing chickens. These, and another batch -- both uncalled for, and both recommended by the jailor as being young and exceedingly tender -- are at the station-house. Here is a chance for the hotels and boarding houses to economize some of their experienced old chickens for special occasions.

_____

STOLE A SHIRT. - James Mitchell, recovering from a chronic bender last night, saw that he had become unclean and dilapidated and had self-respect enough to go and steal a clean shirt. Officer Park arrested him for it.
