Somehow, the report got here yesterday morning that new and exceedingly rich surface mines had been struck in the vicinity of Truckee river, in a range of red hills 12 or 15 miles from this city. We are unable to learn any particulars in regard to the mines. Some three or four vehicles were chartered and a number of men left early yesterday morning for the diggings. There was also a story that the parties who left in the wagons had gone out of town for belligerent purposes, and not to seek mines. However, there is a sort of tradition among the settlers of Washoe Valley that, in early times, four Mexicans dug a couple of mule loads of gold in some of the red hills, near the Truckee; perhaps somebody has found their old diggings.
